William George Spitz, Jr., a caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and our Hero passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the age of 95 years. He was born on September 18, 1930, in Saginaw, Michigan. Son of the late William Spitz, Sr. and Grace (Omhart) Spitz. William attended Saginaw High for only a short time then worked to support his family shoveling coal at Sun Coal Company, after his father became ill. William was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1950-1953 in the Korean War. He became engaged to his childhood sweetheart before leaving for Camp Chaffee Arkansas for basic training. After an Honorable Discharge from military service, William married Dorleen Mae Turner on June 6, 1953, she predeceased him in 2005 after 52 years of marriage. Upon his return, William worked as a Truck Driver for Saginaw Fruit Company for 7 years. He then became employed at Grey Iron Foundry and Nodular Iron until his retirement from General Motors in 1988. William and Dorleen owned their own craft business “A-Dor-A-Bills.”
William loved his family and adored his grandchildren very much. He also enjoyed traveling around to area senior centers to pass out embroidered stars to fellow veterans and sing with his daughter, Michele Spitz, who is a member of the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame. William is so proud of all of his children and grandchildren. He was deeply loved by his family and was a kind and caring husband and father. He had many friends at Meijer where he worked for a short time after retirement and walked daily. He also enjoyed classic cars, watching hockey, boxing and riding his three wheel bike 2-3 miles everyday. He always had a smile on his face and was nicknamed “Smiley”, “Sweetness” and also known to others as “Wild Bill!”
