In Loving Memory of Sondra Kay Fobear
It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sondra Kay Fobear, age 79, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Sondra was widely recognized for her warmth, sincerity, and unwavering devotion to her loved ones. She departed this world surrounded by family who cherished her dearly on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in Saginaw, Michigan. Sondra was born in Bad Axe, Michigan, on February 28, 1947, and was nurtured with love and guidance from her mother and stepfather, laying the foundation for a remarkable life.
Sondra was a proud graduate of Bad Axe High School’s class of 1965 and a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church in Saginaw. Sharing stories with others brought her great joy – an important part of every job she held, from Fast Way Party Store and East Wind Restaurant, to 7-Eleven on Shattuck and Jack’s on Bay Road. She was more than just a co-worker; she was a mentor and friend, always eager to help others or listen with compassion. Her true vocation extended far beyond employment, expressed in the relationships she nurtured and the care she extended to all who crossed her path.
Sondra was a woman deeply moved by music, especially the rhythms and storytelling of country and rock ’n’ roll. She had a lifelong passion for dancing, and won first place in a Twist contest at the Golden Glow Ballroom when she was just 16 years old. She loved spending time at the casino and often traveled to Las Vegas, creating memories that brought happiness and adventure to her life. She also found joy in the quiet rituals of life: collecting milkweed pods with her mother and sisters, sorting seashells and art supplies for her mother’s creative pursuits, tending to the land with family, bird watching, gathering around tables for games of euchre and Uno, and reading, especially Tuesdays with Morrie.
Family was Sondra’s greatest pride. She was a loving and dedicated wife, a proud mother, a cherished daughter, and an affectionate grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, James P. Fobear. Sondra and James were united in marriage on January 1, 1966. She leaves to cherish her memory: two children, James M. (Sharon) Fobear and Melody (Chris) Doyle; three grandchildren, Kylie Fobear, Breanna (Aaron Nash) Sullivan, and Tyler Fobear, as well as three great-grandchildren, who carry on her spirit in new generations. She is also survived by her siblings, Rodney (Peggy) Smith, Carol Lovaas, Connie Sims, Karen (Rick) Warchuck, and Bonnie (Jule) Most; sisters-in-law Patty Smith and Donna Fobear, and brother-in-law Thomas (Mary Lou) Fobear; nieces and nephews, Debera Cunningham, Lori Cunningham, Tim (Vikki) Cunningham, Richard (Lori) Fobear, Luann Edel, Diane (Ron) Gosselin, Thomas Fobear, along with many more nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom were enriched by her presence. Sondra was well-loved and widely known; a woman whose generosity, tenacity, and empathy left a lasting mark. She inspired those around her and brightened every day with her curiosity and tenderness. Her impact extends far beyond her immediate family, reaching into the community and touching all who knew her.
Sondra was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Maxcine and Raymond Fischer; her father and stepmother, Lyman and Marilyn Smith; her brothers, Roger Smith and Mitchell Smith, as well as nephew Bryan Smith. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Floyd and Helen Fobear, and her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Floyd and Audrey Fobear, Gene and Esther Fobear, Jeanette and Gerald O’Dell, Dave Edel, Donna and Robert Ader, and Richard Fobear.
Friends may visit with the family from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026, at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 4480 Mackinaw Rd, Saginaw, MI 48603. A funeral service honoring Sondra’s life will follow at 1:30 p.m., with interment to take place afterward at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends are invited to return to the funeral home for a luncheon in the reception hall following the interment. All are welcome to gather, remember, and celebrate her extraordinary life.
To speak of Sondra is to speak of a life that radiated outward through kindness, perseverance, and a quiet, but unmistakable, wisdom. She was a woman who brought people together, who listened deeply, who gave freely, and who lived with a gentleness that left lasting impressions on all who knew her. Her life reminds us that legacy is not measured in grand gestures alone, but in consistency of love, in shared laughter, and in the enduring bonds of family and friendship.
Rest in peace, Sondra. Your memory and values live on in those you loved, and you will be forever missed.
