Roger Borchard

Loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend, Roger Brennan Borchard, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, October 17, 2025. He was 74 years old.

Born on May 30, 1951 in Saginaw ,to the late Eugene and Barbara (Brennan) Borchard, he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith . He began his education at St. Paul’s Lutheran School and graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1969. Rog attended Delta College where he studied business. He married Nancy Hoffman on July 13, 1974. She survives him.

Roger—known affectionately as “Rog” by many—spent 43 years working at Schaefer Hat Store, where he formed enduring friendships with customers. He also worked at Edwards Men Store, continuing to build relationships that lasted well beyond the sales floor.

Rog was very involved at Michigan Lutheran Seminary, where he cherished his time with faculty, staff, parents, and students. Whether he was in the press box, helping paint lines on the football field, keeping score at basketball games, greeting officials, or setting up for the putting contest at the annual MLS Golf outing, Roger found joy and purpose in supporting the school. MLS was his home away from home . Although Rog never wanted to bring attention to his volunteering, he was recently awarded the Karl Newingham award from the Tri Valley Conference and in 2023 was awarded the MLS Foundation Cardinal Spirit Award.

Roger’s high school years remained a treasured part of his life. A proud member of the Tabernacle Marching Band at Arthur Hill High School, making music with his kazoo, he maintained close ties with many classmates and looked forward to class reunions to reminisce. He was also on the swim/dive team.

His dedication to community service was evident through his involvement in several local organizations. He served for many years as secretary/treasurer of the Arthur Hill Letterwinners and was an active member of the Fordney Club. Alongside his wife Nancy, Roger volunteered for 27 years with PRIDE’s Friday Night Live events, selling beverage tickets and enjoying the camaraderie of old friends and new acquaintances alike. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 439, as a son of a veteran.

Rog took great pride in his yard and could often be found outside reading or planning his next gardening project. Thursdays were reserved for golf, a tradition that spanned decades. On July 4, 1994 he had a hole-in-one witnessed by his former partner, Mike and on September 4 of this year, Roger capped off his final golf season by winning the League Championship once again with his partner Jim.

He also shared a love for University of Michigan football with Nancy. The two held season tickets and relished their visits to the Big House, cheering on the Wolverines amid thousands of fellow fans. He was also an avid Lions, Tigers and Red Wings fan. He, with Nancy, enjoyed volunteering during the Memorial Cup event in Saginaw last summer.

Camping was a favorite summer activity with favorite parks being Brimley and Pt. Crescent. Relaxing on a sandy beach with a book was an enjoyable way to spend time away from home. Another favorite vacation destination was Mackinac Island. While staying at the Grand Hotel, Rog enjoyed golfing the Jewel and Wawashkamo courses. Biking around the Island or staying at the Island House, overlooking the harbor, were fun and memorable times for him and Nancy.

Above all, Roger cherished time spent with his family. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy; their children Amy (Josh) Schluchter and Jason (Rachel) Borchard; and five dear grandchildren who brought him endless pride: Dean and Molly Schluchter, and Mya, Quinn, and Libby Borchard. He also leaves behind his sister Becky (Mike) Metiva; sister-in-law Jill Borchard; several nieces and nephews; cousins; and many dear friends.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Barbara Borchard, as well as his brothers Ron and Rich.

A lifetime faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Roger served on numerous boards and committees over the years. He was also an usher for many years. He was a faithful servant to his church and Lord. His presence will be missed by all who knew him.
