Passed away Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Wellspring Lutheran Services. Age 93 years.

Richard was born on March 23, 1931, in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late Thomas and Louise (Pretzer) Whelton. He was a graduate of Arthur Hill High School. Richard married the love of his life, Carol Jean Yancer on February 28, 1953. He knew from the first time he saw her that she was his soulmate and he dedicated the rest of his life to her and the family they created. She predeceased him on December 8, 2019. Richard retired as a machine repairman from General Motors after 38 years of service. Richard loved music and enjoyed wood carving. He was a member of the Tri City Carvers, helping them work on the carousel at the Saginaw Children's Zoo. Richard was also a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church.

Richard is survived by two daughters: Kathy (Kirk) Rupp and Jane (Mark) Dodge; three grandchildren: Nicholas Rupp, Carly Dodge and Cristi (Brad) Julien; three great-grandchildren: Taylor Dodge-Easley, Cana and Ezekiel Julien; sister Nancy (Bill) Wadsworth, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Myrna and Roger Little, special neighbors Jennifer and Adam, and his beloved cat, BB.

Along with his beloved wife, Carol Whelton, Richard was predeceased by a grandson, Matt Rupp and brother, Glenn Whelton.

Honoring Richard's wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 13, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, 121 S Harrison St, Saginaw, MI 48602. Rev. Ted McCulloch will officiate. In lieu of flowers please make memorials to Tri City Carvers, PO Box 6553, Saginaw, MI 48608-6553.
