Loving mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter passed away in Saginaw, Michigan, on Sunday, February 12th, 2023, at age 73. Renee was born in Saginaw on December 23rd, 1949, to Theano (Anjakos) Pelkey and the late Robert Pelkey. She was a 1968 graduate of Arthur Hill High School and continued her education, attending Delta College where she was a member of Delta Zeta Chi, and then earning an associate degree in Arts from Michigan State University. Throughout the years, Renee worked in various clerical capacities, retiring out of Aflac Insurance. In her free time, Renee was a true patron of the arts and culture, serving as the current president of the Saginaw Culture Club. A musician herself, Renee sang with the Sweet Adelines, performed with the S.U.G.A.R. Ukelele group, and sang monthly at nursing homes throughout the region, as well as in the church’s choir. She loved nature, enjoying spending time gardening and tending to flowers and plants, as well as birdwatching. She was active and adventurous, hunting for beach glass and rocks, especially Pudding Stones. She spent summers in Brown’s Landing in Tawas and one of her happy places growing up was McCollum Lake in Curran, Michigan. Renee was the family genealogist and loved exploring the region, getting lost in people’s back yards while geocaching. She loved spending time with her grandkids, recently teaching one of them how to drive. Renee is remembered as being the sweetest woman you’ve ever met, with a beautiful soul and a musical personality. She was prone to break out in song and was a supportive and loving woman who was always everyone’s number one fan. She was a peaceful and calming person who kept the Lord in her heart and who would welcome anyone.
Renee is survived by mother Theano Pelkey; daughters Erin (Thomas) Reou, and Megan (Alan Jacobs) McGregor; grandchildren Zoe Jayne Lucio, Sophia Lucio, Jillian Reou, and Cadence Jacobs; sisters Aileen (Jim) Kushon and Cheryl (Bill) Zinz; and nieces and nephews Carrie (Corby) Horlings, Sarah (Jefferson) Wiggins, and Jeff Zinz; as well as many cousins, other family members, and the innumerous friends she made throughout her years loving and supporting her community.
Renee was preceded in death by father Robert Pelkey and daughter Kelly McGregor.
In accordance with Renee’s wishes, cremation is to take place, with a memorial service planned for 11:00am on Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at Michigan Avenue Baptist, 203 S Michigan Ave, Saginaw, MI 48602, Rev. Carol McCleary presiding. Visitation will take place from 10:00am until the time of service. Those wanting to make a show of their sympathy may wish to make a contribution to Major Chords for Minors.
