Nicholas E. Shields, age 85, of Hemlock, Michigan, passed away at his home on Sunday, July 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on August 4, 1939, to the late Edward Nicholas Shields and Flossie (Ludlum) Shields.
Nick graduated from Arthur Hill Trade School and St. Andrew Catholic School. He served country in the United States Army from 1963 – 1965 and then with the Army Reserve from 1965-1967. He worked as a sheet metal fabricator for AT Ferrell for 24 years. He also worked as a custodian for St. John XXIII Parish – St. Mary Church for 16 years, where he was a member.
Nick liked to work with his hands and was “Mr. Fix It,” and he loved farming. He enjoyed Sunday dinners with his family, and he liked doing puzzles. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. In his free time, he enjoyed going to the casino.
Nick is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara (Jungnitsch) Shields. They were united in marriage on August 24, 1963. He leaves three children to cherish his memory: Debbie (John) Letts of Hemlock, Kim (Ken) Quackenbush of Freeland, and Ed (Karen) Shields of Hemlock; seven grandchildren: John Letts, Jr., Julia Letts, Nicholas Shields, Stephen Shields, Lilly (Brandon Jaksa) Shields-Jaksa, Jack Quackenbush, and Ryan Quackenbush; and one great grandchild Hudson Letts. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Ann Houghten of Walsenburg, CO; and his sister-in-law Marlene Flinn of South Ogden, UT.
Nick was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law Liz Kitter and Gary Kitter, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ed Jungnitsch and Kathryn Jungnitsch, and brother-in-law Allen Houghten and brother-in-law Floyd Flinn.
Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 201 N Miller Rd, Saginaw, MI 48609. The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at St. John XXIII Parish, St. Mary Church, 151 St. Mary’s Dr, Hemlock, MI 48626, officiated by Rev. Fr. Sunil Pallela. Following the service interment will take place in St. Mary Cemetery in Hemlock, where military honors will be conducted by the United States Army and the V.F.W.
