Obituary

Maureen Bridget (Fleming) Rupp was born on July 4, 1948, to Peter and Catherine (Ryan) Fleming. A devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, cherished sister, and dear friend to many, Maureen lived a life defined by love, kindness, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to her family.

Maureen grew up on her family's farm in Merrill, Michigan, a place she loved and cherished throughout her life. She never forgot her farming roots and delighted in sharing stories of her childhood and the adventures she and her siblings enjoyed growing up together. Although life eventually took her far from the place she called home, her connection to Merrill and the family she grew up with remained strong.

Maureen attended Delta College before earning her teaching degree from Western Michigan University in December 1970. While attending different colleges, Maureen and Tom were introduced by mutual friends. They married on July 17, 1971, and welcomed their first child the following year. They settled outside Detroit, Michigan, where they began building their life and family together. Over the next 17 years, their family grew to include five children, with their youngest arriving in 1989.

Tom's career eventually brought the family to Bluefield, West Virginia, in the early 1980s, and then to Teays Valley, West Virginia, in 1983. In 1995, the family relocated to Barre, Vermont, where Maureen and Tom would eventually retire. In 2022, they returned to the Teays Valley area.

Above all, Maureen's greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife and mother who took great pride in her children and loved cheering them on from the sidelines at their sporting events. Nothing made her happier than having her family together, and she cherished the simple pleasure of spending time with those she loved. As her family grew, so did her joy. She adored her grandchildren and never needed much of an excuse to visit. She was known to arrive with a smile and announce, "I was just in the neighborhood," even when that neighborhood was an hour and a half from home. It became a familiar family joke and a perfect reflection of how much she valued simply being together.

Maureen was gracious and kind to everyone she met. While she dedicated much of her life to raising her own five children, her compassion extended far beyond her family. She never hesitated to help a child or someone in need. For many years, she volunteered as a religious education teacher at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, sharing her faith and kindness with young people. She also spent 20 years as a paraeducator at Barre City Elementary School, where she devoted herself to supporting and encouraging children.

Maureen often said that her family was her greatest treasure, but she was our gift. Her love was constant, her kindness genuine, and her greatest happiness came from the people she held dear.

Maureen is survived by her husband, Thomas Allen Rupp, and their five children: Jennifer Rupp Correa (Michael), David Rupp (Katherine Steele), Colleen Rupp Leonard (Christopher), Steven Rupp and Catherine Rupp.

She was a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren: Isabelle and Thomas Correa; Madeline, Alani, Naomi, Evelyn, and Gabriel Rupp; and Ethan and Natalie Leonard.

She is also survived by her siblings William Fleming (Barb), Dennis Fleming, Jane Fleming Janze, and Sheila Bugbee (Brian); her sisters-in-law Dianne Fleming, Patricia Rupp Dunn (George), and Nancy Rupp Geraci (Mario); and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Catherine (Ryan) Fleming; her sister, Anne Fleming; her brother, Larry Fleming; her sister-in-law, Kammie Fleming, her brother-in-law, David Janze and her nephew Nicholas Bugbee.

Maureen will be remembered for her generous heart, her gentle kindness, and the way she made those around her feel loved. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, extended family, and the countless lives she touched along the way.

Family and friends will gather in Midland, Michigan, in the summer of 2027 to celebrate and honor Maureen’s life. Details will be shared at a later date. Those wishing to honor Maureen’s life and memory may consider making a donation to a charity close to their heart in lieu of flowers.
