Obituary

Mary Beth Tunney of Saginaw, Michigan

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Covenant HealthCare – Cooper. She was 61 years old. Mary B. Hammond was born on September 24, 1964, in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late John H. Hammond and Gladys M. (Miller) Hammond. She was a proud 1982 graduate of Arthur Hill High School. Mary also attended Delta College, receiving her Associate Degree in Applied Science. While working at La Senorita restaurant, she met the love of her life and stud muffin, Ronald “Ron” J. Tunney. They began dating, fell in love, and were united in marriage on October 1, 1986; he survives her. Mary worked for 30 years in the radiology department for Covenant HealthCare where she held positions in radiography, special procedures, bone density, and mammography. The role of her lifetime, one she treasured and cherished above all others, was being a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Mary was a longtime and faithful member of Ames United Methodist Church, where she actively volunteered with the MOPS program, mentoring new mothers, and was also a member of the bell choir. Anyone who knew Mary knew she was a perfectionist, especially when painting her home or helping others paint their home. She was a gifted and talented seamstress able to create and design curtains, as well as fixing anyone’s shirts, dresses, or pants. Mary, lovingly known as the “queen of spray paint” enjoyed glamping, traveling, and taking trips to Disney, but especially loved being on a Disney cruise. She also enjoyed working on puzzles, taking bike rides, landscaping her yard, kayaking, cross-country skiing, and keeping her husband busy with honey-do-lists. Mary will forever be remembered for her silly and wonderful sense of humor, compassion for anyone in need, and for being a generous and shining spirit to her family and friends.

Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Ron J. Tunney of Saginaw; five children: Breann (Sean) McMannamy, Erin (Erik) Finnegan, Katie (Duncan) McConnell, Isaiah (Lauren) Castillo, and Zach Castillo; three grandchildren: Emry Finnegan, Claudia McMannamy, and Charlie Jay Castillo; three sisters: Debbie (George Huegel) Roditcher, Julie Hammond, and Wendy Hammond. Also surviving are countless nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Hammond and Gladys Hammond; and a father-in-law, Robert Tunney Jr.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her coworkers and the staff at Covenant HealthCare for all the love and care they provided to Mary and the family. A special thank you to her devoted prayer chain which she was blessed to be a part of.

Honoring Mary’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 4480 Mackinaw Road, Saginaw, MI 48603. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the funeral home on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
