Marlene Kay Howell went home to Jesus on Thursday, November 12, 2020, peacefully at her home; at the age of 82 years.
The daughter of the late Howard McEwan and Dorothy Mae (Maul) Thomas, Marlene was born on June 11, 1938 in Saginaw, Michigan. She graduated from Arthur Hill High School, with the class of 1956; she then attended Asbury College in Lexington, KY, and completed her Bachelor of Arts and Master’s Degree in Education at Saginaw Valley State College. Marlene met and married William S. Howell at West Michigan E.U.B. Church in 1960. She retired from Caro Community Schools in 1998 after 21 years of service, teaching remedial reading & first grade.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, William S. Howell, and her two daughters, Laura (Laurie) A. Howell, and Leslie L. Howell both of Saginaw, six grand-dogs, many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Beside her parents, she is predeceased by her brothers, Roy (Buck), and Barry Thomas, and sister Kathleen (Kathy) Thorn.
Marlene gave her life to Jesus Christ as a young teenager. Her faith was encouraged by the love and mentorship of the late Rev. Howard and Mrs. Mary (Mom) Anderson. Marlene’s faith and prayers were instrumental in the spiritual development of her husband and daughters, family, and friends. Marlene was called to pray for others and was faithful in this ministry. In her lifetime, she worshipped at Grace Presbyterian Church, West Michigan E.U.B./U.M.C. and Ames U.M.C.
Marlene was passionate about sharing her love of children’s books, first with her daughters, then her students, and with the children of friends & family. Marlene and Bill, became publishers of The Country Register of Michigan in 1989. Up until her death, she proof-read all recipes and corrected our grammar! When her health allowed, she loved shopping, making it her mission to support the shops that advertised with us! Marlene dabbled in watercolor painting and cross-stitch. She was a die-hard Michigan Wolverine fan and enjoyed watching most any collegiate sport. She read cookbooks like novels, and enjoyed following the life of Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
At Marlene’s request, cremation has taken place. Given the current pandemic, no services are planned at this time. A celebration of her life will be held at a date to be determined. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Asbury College Student Scholarships or Open Door Ministry.
