Lonnie John Florida

Lon passed away at Covenant Medical Center following a hard fought illness on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at the age of 70 years. He was born on April 3, 1950 to the late Jack and Maureen (Hooper) Florida in Detroit, Michigan. Lon was a graduate of Grand Blanc High School and Mott Adult Education. He later attended Mott Community College and Delta College, earning associates degrees. Lon proudly served three years in the United States Army. He fought bravely in the Vietnam War where he earned the Army Commendation Medal. Lon was a proud veteran and loved his country.

On February 14, 1992, Lon married Mary Louise Sherwood in Burton, Michigan. They have been married for 28 blessed years. Throughout their time together, Lon and Mary made many great memories. In his eyes, fishing was gospel! Lonnie’s natural surrounding was holding a fishing pole in hand and a small mouth bass hooked on the other. He held great joy in being active with his family and church community. Lonnie’s dedication and commitment to the Lord was unquestionable. He not only talked about his faith in Jesus Christ, but he lived it in action. Lonnie was enthusiastic about spreading the word of God to people in all walks of life and would regularly spread the message throughout the community. He was a people person and openly accepted everyone with a loving heart.

Lon was employed for General Motors and Delphi Automotive. He also worked for Dow Chemical and later drove school bus for Hemlock Public Schools. Lon was an active member of Community Baptist Church in Saginaw. He regularly supported the church through driving the bus, soul-winning, volunteering to support any event, and attending steadfast with a bright smile on his face.

Lonnie is survived by his wife Mary, children: Cara Florida, Matthew Florida, Tamara Hanes, Nicole Gutierrez- Rainy, Andrew Williams, Charles Williams, Deanna Williams; grandchildren: Cora Willson, Brianna Konsez, Alicia Konsez, Tyne Thomas, Wren Johnson, Reed Johnson, Tegan Rainey and great grandchild Ava Flood. Lon is also survived by his siblings William Florida, Michael Florida, Loretta Smith, Sheila Younglove and James Florida.

He was predeceased by his siblings Flora (Jackie) Hedger and Timothy Florida.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Community Baptist Church (8331 Gratiot Road, Saginaw). Dr. Douglas R. Jackson will officiate. Burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at church. Due to the world health pandemic, indoor building capacity is limited, face coverings are required, and social distancing will be encouraged. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in our community.
