Obituary

Joseph Anthony Rutkiewicz Sr, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great‑grandfather, veteran, and proud Polish‑Italian son of Brooklyn, New York, passed away surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 29, 1930, to Anthony Thomas Rutkiewicz Sr. and Catherine Elanor (Albino) Rutkiewicz, Joseph grew up in a lively, close‑knit home as one of six siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, whose influence instilled in him the values of loyalty, humor, hard work, and love of family that guided him throughout his life.

Joseph honorably served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, bringing precision, skill, and steady dedication to every aircraft under his care. He was an alumnus of Wichita State graduating with a BA Mechanical Engineering degree, “Go Shockers!”. Later, he built a long and committed career with GM Saginaw Steering Gear, where he worked faithfully until retirement.

In 1957, Joseph married Tommie Ann Moffett, the love of his life. Their extraordinary 68‑year marriage was rooted in devotion, partnership, and enduring affection. They moved to Michigan in 1965, where they raised their four children and built a warm, welcoming home filled with love, laughter, and cherished traditions. Tommie Ann passed away in 2021, and Joseph carried her memory close to his heart.

Joseph lived a full and joyful life. He was an avid golfer, a dedicated bowler, a skilled woodworker, and a lifelong reader. He especially enjoyed playing cards, and his cheerful spirit—often punctuated by his familiar “Holy mackerel!”—brought warmth and laughter to those around him.

Family was Joseph’s greatest pride. He is survived by his children: Kathy (Bill) Kehoe, Joseph Rutkiewicz Jr., Patty Rutkiewicz, and Jason (Briana) Rutkiewicz.

He was a proud grandfather to: Joseph III ‘Tony’ (Lora) Rutkiewicz, Lindsey Kehoe, Chris Kehoe, Nicholas Kehoe (preceded in death), Katelyn (Brandon) Lang, Emma Rutkiewicz, Matthew Rutkiewicz.

His love continues through his great‑grandchildren: Vincent, Logan, and Malcolm Rutkiewicz, and Elizabeth Lang.

Joseph will be remembered for his generous heart, gentle strength, sharp wit, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His legacy lives on in the stories he shared, the values he instilled, and the countless memories held dearly by all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held later. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to the Salvation Army or Amazing Grace Animal Rescue.
