Obituary

John Phillip McRae, born June 23, 1947, in Saginaw, Michigan, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of service, love, and devotion.

John proudly served his country in both the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. During the Vietnam War, he served as a medic, caring for fellow service members with courage and compassion. After returning home, he continued a life of service in many ways. He co-owned an optical business, served as a deputy sheriff where he also was a DEA agent, working with the Gang Task Force and secret service, later worked in hospital security and was a certified NRA pistol instructor. Whatever he did, he believed in doing it well and helping others whenever he could.

Among John’s greatest blessings were his three children. He loved them deeply, took pride in the people they became and cherished the memories they shared together over the years.

His love story began when he met Sue while she was working as an assistant manager and bartender in a local bar. What started as a chance encounter blossomed into a loving marriage that lasted 40 years. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, shared dreams, and countless memories.

John loved to travel and was always ready for the next adventure. He also had a special place in his heart for the family's cats, who were never far from his side. He had a playful spirit and loved making people laugh with his jokes and his silly sense of humor. He could be strong and dependable when life called for it, but he also knew how to make those he loved smile.

To Sue, John was more than a husband. He was her best friend, her partner, her protector, and the love of her life. Together they faced life's joys and its hardest challenges, always side by side. Their love was built not only on the good times but also on faithfulness, perseverance, and the promise they made to one another so many years ago.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Sue, along with his children, Kimberly (Stephen) Foster, Michelle Boruszewski and John McRae, 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary McRae, sister Barb Eagle and brother Don McRae.

In keeping with John's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of John's Life will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Second Presbyterian Church, 2665 Midland Rd, Saginaw, MI 48603. Rev. Dr. Susan Hitts will officiate. Friends may visit the family from 3:30 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the church.

John's family asks that those who attend remember him as he lived—with a smile, a joke, and a heart that was always ready for the next adventure. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Undercover Angels Animal Rescue of Saginaw.  Please share your words of condolence with the family at www.casefuneralhome.com.
