Beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away early Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at the age of 83 years. He was born November 21, 1932, in Saginaw, the son of the late John and Grace (Amspoker) Kohlschmidt. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Merrill, with the Class of 1950, and later received his Bachelor degree from Michigan State University. He served with the US Air Force in the Korean War. Doug had been employed as an insurance adjustor with Frankenmuth Mutual Insurance, retiring after many years of service. He had been a member of the Hemlock-Merrill VFW Post #7302, and of various fraternal organizations. He was an avid pool player. He was also an avid MSU Spartan football fan. Doug was everyone's friend. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law and two grandsons, Michelle and Joel Strasz and their sons, James and Daniel, all of Bay City; his sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Richard Dougherty, Merrill, and their children , Julie and Greg Foye, Jodi and Larry Wegner, Jill and Mark Brown, and Jeff Dougherty, and their families; many extended relatives in the Bigelow family. Memorial services will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 4, 2016, at the W. L. Case & Company Funeral Chapel, 125 E. Saginaw Street, Merrill. Rev. Fr. Dennis Kucharczyk will officiate. Military honors will be under the auspices of the Hemlock-Merrill VFW Post #7302. Doug's family will receive friends at the funeral home in Merrill from 2:00 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2016, and then on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
