Joan went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the age of 87. She passed away peacefully at Rosewood Memory Home in Dewitt, Michigan. Joan was born on December 15, 1932 to the late Alec and Ethel (Dean) Reimer in Saginaw, Michigan. She graduated from St. Mary Cathedral High School and later married Tom Spence in 1956. Tom preceded her in death in 2001. She was remarried in 2002 to James Sullivan; the two have spent 17 years together.
Joan spent most of her years as a stay at home mother caring for her four children. She was a member of the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption, St. Mary Cathedral for many years. Joan loved to garden, travel and shop. She had a true love for dogs, especially her Jack Russell Winnie. Many of her winters were spent as a “snow bird” in Venice, Florida. Above all she cherished spending time with her beloved family.
Joan is survived by her husband James Sullivan; children: Tom Spence, Carolyn (Steve Spalding) Spence, Jeanne Spence, Donna (Scott) Sowulewski; grandchildren: Elizabeth (Josh Falkiewicz) Spence, Adrienna Spence, Kathleen McConnell, Bryan (Katie) McConnell, Alec Peroni, Spence Sowulewski, Jayne Sowulewski, Ryan Sowulewski and great grandchild Ella McConnell. Also surviving her, are many Sullivan stepchildren and grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Sister Jean Reimer and Joyce Nelson.
Joan was preceded in death by her siblings June McIntyre, Jerry Reimer, Janet Halaby and James Reimer.
Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family funeral will take place at a later date. The family will gather at her home at Point Lookout for a weekend of memories and to celebrate her life.
