James Michael
Chalenko
April 20, 1944 – April 15, 2026
James Michael Chalenko, a devoted firefighter and beloved friend, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, just five days shy of his 82nd birthday. Born on April 20, 1944, in Saginaw, Michigan, James was the cherished son of the late John and Eunice B. (Coffey) Chalenko. His life was deeply rooted in the community that shaped him, and he carried the spirit of Saginaw with him in every endeavor.
A graduate of Saginaw High School, James found his true calling as a firefighter for the city of Saginaw, where he made history as the youngest ever to be promoted to Lieutenant. His dedication to his role extended far beyond fighting fires; he was the heart of the firehouse, lovingly taking on all the grocery shopping and cooking, nurturing not only the physical but also the emotional well-being of his fellow firemen. His love for the job was matched only by the deep camaraderie he shared with his colleagues, many of whom felt more like family.
James lived a full life just the way he wanted and wouldn’t have changed a thing. Those who knew him remember a man unwavering in his loyalty, a steadfast friend who would do anything for those he cared about. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering support created bonds that will endure long after his passing.
He is survived by three sisters Nancy Pietrzak, Tootie Bushor, and Debbie (Randy) Scott; two nieces Kristi Wendland and Jamie (Rob) Oglesby; his great nephew and great nieces Dustin (RyAnne) Griffith, Krysta (Justin) Doud, Olivia (Brett) Antonelli, and Alyssa Wendland, and a loving and devoted caretaker Helen DeLude and her daughter, Lisa DeLude, who did everything she could to care for Jim who was like a brother to her.
In honor of James’ wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will take place at a later date.
Arrangements were entrusted to W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 4480 Mackinaw Rd, Saginaw, MI 48603. Please share memories of James by visiting www.casefuneralhome.com.
