Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Guadalupe Vargas, who left this world on May 8, 2026, in Saginaw, Michigan. Born on April 5, 1928, in Au Gres, Michigan, Guadalupe lived a long and beautiful life rooted in love, service, and unwavering devotion to her family. She was a cherished daughter of Mercede Fausto and Apolonia Martinez (Alamillo), and was also lovingly raised by her bonus father, Benjamin Martinez. She married the love of her life Filemon Ruiz Vargas, and he predeceased her in 1988.

Guadalupe was a woman of deep compassion and quiet strength. She dedicated much of her life to caring for others, beginning with her work supporting the nuns and children at St. Vincent’s orphanage. Her gentle presence and generous spirit helped create a nurturing environment for countless young lives, reflecting her lifelong desire to uplift those around her.

Her commitment to service extended far beyond the orphanage. Guadalupe was an active volunteer within her church community, participating in the Host Program at Jessie Rouse Elementary School and giving her time to Habitat for Humanity. She was a proud member of St. Joseph’s Damas de Guadalupe, Cursillista, was a member of the Bernardines Franciscan Associate group. Her faith and compassion carried her across borders as she traveled to the Dominican Republic and Mexico on mission trips, offering aid and comfort to families in need.

Guadalupe attended Delta College for a time, where she discovered a love for woodworking. She also enjoyed playing bingo and was known for her energetic spirit — always on the move, always ready for the next adventure. Her love of travel took her to many places, including the unforgettable experience of visiting Rome. After the passing of her beloved husband, she took up learning to play various instruments. With that knowledge, she volunteered to teach community children how to play the piano and guitar. There was truly nothing that Guadalupe couldn’t do to show her love and commitment to her family and community.

Family was the heart of Guadalupe’s world. She treasured every moment spent with her loved ones, creating a home filled with laughter, warmth, and unwavering support. Her presence was a source of comfort, her love a constant gift.

She leaves behind a legacy carried forward by her children: Richard Vargas of Ohio; Stephen Vargas of Saginaw, MI; Alice (Henry) Guzman of Saginaw, MI; Cynthia Vargas of Ann Arbor, MI; Candace (Hani) Maroki of Sterling Heights, MI; and honorary daughter Socorro (Rey) Castano of Texas. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren — Corrina, Roland, and Robert Vargas; Jennifer (Mike) Smith; James and Lori Guzman; Elena Vargas; Sarah (Alex) Shamaoun; Amy (Justin) Rieser; and Adam Maroki — as well as her great‑grandchildren Natalie and Andrew Smith; Chase and Skyler Shamaoun; and Hazel and Jude Rieser. She is also survived by her brothers Emilio (Dolores) Martinez and Augustine (Jean) Martinez; sisters Gloria(Bob) Fulsher and Alice (Anthony) Stricker; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved her deeply.

Guadalupe is reunited in eternal rest with her beloved husband, Filemon Ruiz Vargas; her parents; her children Filemon M. Vargas and Denise Vargas; grandchildren Leah Maroki and Logan Vargas; brothers Jose Garcia, Anthony Martinez, and Johnnie Martinez; and sisters Esther Olvera and Maria Trevino, and her beloved Buffy.

Guadalupe’s kindness, resilience, and boundless love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. Her legacy is one of faith, service, and the enduring power of family. May she rest in peace.
