Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend went peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, July 11, 2025, at his home, at the age of 96 years.
Born on April 29. 1929 in Bridgeport Township, MI to the late Artlett (Wright) and William F. Housner, Fred would be a life-long resident of his hometown. He graduated from Arthur Hill Trade School; the class of 1945. Fred then served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1951-1953, being stationed in Japan. He married Barbara Ellen Strauch upon returning from the Army on June 20, 1953; his wife of 72 years survives him. Fred then worked for Delta Door, retiring after over 44 years of service in 1994. Community was important to Fred, and it showed in his faith and works. He became an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in 1953 and later St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in 2007. Fred was also part of the St. James Lutheran Church Building Committee, Past President of the St. James Lutheran Church Council, Bridgeport Township Planning Commission, Bridgeport Historical Society, built sets for the Pit & Balcony Theatre groups, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Fred also enjoyed gardening, woodworking- often making gifts for family and friends, tractor restoration, and cheering on Michigan Sports teams particularly the Detroit Tigers. Fred also cherished his family.
Surviving besides his beloved wife, Barbara, are their children and their spouses: Joan (Deceased) and Tom McMath of Shelby Township, Michigan; Mr. Randal and Cynthia Housner of Wadsworth, IL; Dr. Gregory Housner and Stephanie Larson of Chelsea, MI; Dr. Jeffrey and Allison Housner of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren: Scott and Lilly Kem-Wolchok, Jennifer and Brett Schryer, John Housner, Katee Housner, Emma Housner, Isabel Housner, Stein and Sophia Housner, Max Housner; great-grandchildren: Arelia Kem-Wolchok, Arthur Kem-Wolchok, Grant Schryer, his sister Artlett McAulay of Midland, MI; daughter-in-law Marybeth Housner and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by a daughter, Joan McMath, his brother Richard Housner, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Fred and Edna (Fischer) Strauch.
Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2025, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 6065 King Rd., Bridgeport, MI. Pastor Diane Sponheim will officiate with burial at Pine Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 5700 Dixie HWY. and on Monday at church, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service.
