They record her daily life as well as her hopes, fears and dreams of the future, as did many letters other wives and mothers wrote to soldiers of the Greatest Generation. One early letter includes a finely drawn diagram showing Lt. Young the floor plan of the apartment she rented for herself and baby Linda. Like many of her time, she was unable to attend college, but worked to help ensure her children became university graduates. Many pictures, letters, notes and other mementos of her life are contained in 18 scrapbooks, which she began keeping in 1941 for future generations. She lived in 19 locations, in 7 states, during her long life, a fact recorded in the autobiography she wrote for family members in 2003. In it, she wrote "it has been a good and privileged life.
