Obituary

Elaine Sue Fuentes, age 71, of Carrollton, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Elaine was born on June 6, 1954, in Hillman, Michigan to the late Floyd Wallace Barrie and Mary Matilda (Crawford) Barrie.

A proud graduate of Hillman High School, Elaine furthered her education at Davenport University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in computer science. She worked for Covenant Health Care for over 20 years, and continued working in software implementation, retiring in 2017.

Elaine had a zest for life that was evident in her many passions and interests. She enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors, relishing camping trips and the breathtaking sunsets that nature had to offer. She cherished the moments spent with her loved ones in Tawas and Caseville and the Barrie Lodge in Hillman. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed preparing meals for family gatherings and baking Christmas cookies. She also found joy in playing board games and cards with her family.

Elaine was actively involved in the fight against Huntington’s Disease, participating in numerous walks and fundraisers to support this important cause. Her commitment to such initiatives illustrated her generous spirit and desire to make a difference.

Elaine is survived by her three loving sons, Dominic Fuentes, Tony (Jordan Engelhardt) Fuentes, and Louis "Matt" (Alisha Hansen) Fuentes, and her boys good friend Bill Marshall, who Elaine thought of as her “bonus son”. She also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Benny, and Christina Sue. Elaine shared a close bond with her three sisters and two brothers: John Barrie, Diane Connon, Judith (Eric) Nyhuis, Nancy (Mark) Sorensen, and James (Noreen) Barrie. She was blessed with sisters-in-law Diane Fuentes, Laura Bush, Nancy Chmielewski, and Margaret Barrie, as well as two special aunts affectionately known as "Mimi" and "YiYi." Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends also survive her, each holding a special place in her heart.

Elaine was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Robert Barrie, Mary Jean Caverly, and Ronald Barrie; one sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Cheryl Barrie, Lowell Connon, and Hector Caverly; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Manuel and Sophia Fuentes.

Elaine will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and love for her family, which were the cornerstones of her life. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.
