Donald Elliott

Saginaw, Michigan

After 96 long and wonderful years surrounded by the love of a big beautiful family and sustained by his Catholic faith, Donald N. Elliott passed away comfortably on October, 12, 2022 in Saginaw, Michigan, the town he had called home since his birth in 1926.

As a young man, he served in World War II stationed in the Phillipines. After returning in 1946, he spent his entire working life as a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office, just this year celebrating 75 years as a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. For his entire career, he delivered mail on the same route where until his death he prided himself on the fact that he could still remember the street address of every family. . . and most remembered him! Don was a gifted athlete, delighting his family and friends playing AAA league softball under the lights at Hoyt Park for years. He later played golf and basketball and was still competitive under the hoop well into his sixties. Don also loved music, especially Elvis Presley and in his early years as a father, he would occasionally break into “Hound Dog” as a way to put the kids to sleep at night. He was also a formidable Euchre player well known for his frequent “according to Hoyle” comeuppances for competitors and partners alike. He also had a wonderful sense of humor which has provided his friends and family with memories for a lifetime. He and his beloved wife Barbara loved Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and as soon as the Mackinaw Bridge opened in 1957, it became synonymous with the family vacation they would take with their sizable brood each summer. After their nest was empty, the two of them continued to spend weeks each summer exploring every inch of their beloved U.P. in the van Barbara had outfitted just for them and their dog Dusty. Don was preceded in death years ago by an infant son Ted Joseph and then twenty years ago by his beloved wife Barbara with whom he raised their seven children.

He leaves behind those seven children: Neeta Delaney, Darla Mayer, Fonda Mauch, Don Paul Elliott, Ron Elliott, Teresa Elliott and Nola Lohman - ten grandchildren: Noah Delaney, Adam Delaney, Michael Mayer, Fr. Ted J. Mauch, Barb Wikel, Quincy Elliott, Marita Elliott, Rebecca Elliott, Bryan Lohman and Joshua Lohman - nine great grandchildren: Maya Delaney, Jack Delaney, Mason Mayer, Colton Wikel, Archer Elliott, Carter Elliott, Ethan Elliott, Ainsley Elliott and Emma Lohman. He also leaves behind Janet Gallant, his much-loved constant companion for the last eight years of his life.

The funeral liturgy will take place at Noon, Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish, St. Helen Church, 2415 N. Charles St. Saginaw, MI 48602. Mr. Elliott’s grandson, Fr. Ted J. Mauch will officiate with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may visit with family at the Church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral liturgy. www.casefuneralhome.com
