Obituary

Bertha Helen Schiedt of Merrill, Michigan

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Pinehaven Assisted Living in Hemlock. She was 97 years old. Daughter of the late Nicholas S. and Bertha (Hammer) Malone, she was born on May 8, 1929, in Hannibal, Missouri. She married Herbert A. Schiedt on May 5, 1951, by Pastor Zeile at Bethlehem Lutheran Rectory; he preceded her in death on August 12, 1991. Bertha attended and graduated from Detroit Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. In 1952, she became a pharmacist and served the communities of Detroit, Saginaw, Hemlock, Shepherd, and Chesaning, working well into her 80’s. The role she treasured and cherished the most was being a loving and devoted wife, mother, and especially grandmother. A faithful Lutheran her entire life, she previously attended Zion Lutheran Church in Hemlock and more recently attended Messiah Lutheran Church with her daughter and son-in-law. Bertha held a special place in her heart for all animals, especially all her cats and dogs. She was known for taking in all strays, and all her pets lovingly found her. Bertha loved spending time with her family and playing cards, especially Euchre. To her family, Bertha was the best Euchre player this side of the Mississippi River. She was an avid sports fan and loved cheering for all the Detroit Teams: Tigers, Lions, and Pistons. A mother and friend to all, her home became the center of all gatherings and beacon of life and a haven for all her children’s friends. Bertha’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren, they filled her life with immeasurable love, joy, and happiness.

Surviving are one son, one daughter and their spouses: Nicholas A. (Julie) Schiedt of Midland; Jill (Shane) Young of Hemlock; four grandchildren: Carolyn Hope (Shane) Flattery of Saginaw; James Nicholas (Nicole) Ling of Las Vegas; Tyler Young of Hemlock; Jesse Young of Midland; three great-grandchildren: Calvin Nicholas Ling, Grace Eileen Flattery, and Liam Thomas Flattery; nieces and nephews: Jessica (Ric) Johnston, Richard (Kathy) Chaney, Wayne (Linda) Bamberg; Jeff Bamberg; Robert (Renee) Malone, Debbie Malone, Walter (Karen) Malone, Scott (Angie) Malone, Tracy Malone, and Jim (Kelly) Malone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert A. Schiedt; parents: Nicholas (Minnie) Malone and Bertha (Doc) Dinoro; sister, Gertrude (Edward) Kilian, two brothers: Robert (Annie) Malone and Clarence Malone; sister-in-law, Martha (Raymond) Bamberg; a niece, Carole Weber; and three nephews, Dale Malone; Edward Kilian, and Brian Kilian.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 201 N. Miller Rd., Saginaw, Michigan 48609.
