Burris, Texas Homer Saginaw, Michigan Passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at Healthsource of Saginaw, age 88 years. Tex was born in Riceville, Tennessee April 2, 1925 the son of the late Tiny Elizabeth (Firestone) and Abe Burris. Tex came from humble beginnings, as a tenant farmer's son, lifting himself out of poverty. He married Freedah Mae Chastain March 22, 1946 in Rossville, Georgia, coming to Saginaw in 1949. She predeceased him November 29, 2004. Tex served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater with the 38th Infantry (Cyclone) Division. He participated in the Battle for the Recapture of Corregidor and saw action on New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon at Zigzag Pass. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 bronze stars and 1 bronze arrowhead; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze star and the World War II Victory Medal. He obtained the rank of Technician 5th class before leaving the service in 1945. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 22 and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. Tex operated a crane for several years for various companies. He began working for Wolverine Gas Products in 1965, retiring in 1986. He attended Grace Baptist Church in Saginaw. He enjoyed his great-granddaughters and his dog, Tish. Tex is survived by his daughter, Dorothy E. (Richard) Beauch; his son, David E. (Shari) Burris; three grandsons, Richard D. (Karen) Beauch, Ty Burris and Brett (Christine) Burris; four great-grandchildren, Amanda (Kelly) Stevens, Megan Beauch, Harrison David and Brandon Burris; one great-great-granddaughter, Zoe Grace Burris; a sister, Otsa Olva Isibill, Etowah, Tennessee. He was predeceased by two brothers, Port and Ervin Burris. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Tex's caregivers, Laura, Kathy S., Kathy L., Kim, Tracy and other caregivers for the loving care they showed to Tex. The funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2014 at W. L. Case & Company, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. Rev. Terry Kuhns will officiate with military services conducted under the auspices of American Legion Post No. 22. Entombment will take place at Oakwood Mausoleum. Friends may visit with the family at the W. L. Case Funeral Chapel Thursday from 2:00 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service.
