Haines, Richard (Dick), Midland, formerly of Saginaw Former long-time Saginaw West Side businessman and Saginaw car salesman passed away Thursday Jan. 10, 2019 after a short illness. Dick was born April 15, 1932 to the late Paul & Ambra (Ellithorpe) Haines. He was a member of the Arthur Hill High School class of 1950 where he was Captain of the AHHS swim team. He attended Bay City Junior College where he was an All-American swimmer. He then served in the US Army. Dick married the former Sally Ippel in 1952. She predeceased him in 2014. Following his discharge from the Army, Dick and Sally returned to Saginaw where he began his business career in his wifes family business, The J.W. Ippel Company. Dick worked at the Ippel Co. until its closing in 1982, serving as General Manager and Treasurer. Dick was well known on the West Side for his dedication and devotion to making the West Side a great asset for the City of Saginaw and the West Side business district. He served as Chairman of the West Side Art Fair for many years and also served as President of the West Side Saginaw Civic Association. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce, always advocating for the West Side. In addition, Dick was a former President of the Pioneer Club and Fordney Club of Saginaw, where at the time of his passing he was the oldest living past president. Dick was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Saginaw for over 50 years. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and MSU and Tigers fan. He also was a member of the Midland Cribbage Club after moving to Midland. As a life-long Republican, Dick was also proud to have run as a "sacrificial lamb" candidate for the State House back in 1994. After the closing of the Ippel Co., Dick went to work for Martin Chevrolet (now Garber Chevrolet) for many years retiring as its General Manager. Following his retirement, he then proudly served as a crossing guard for the Saginaw Township Police Department. Surviving are his four children, Deborah, Houston Texas, Richard (Suzette Gerard) Santee California, Scott (Barbara) Midland, and Karen (Robert) Neilson Frankenmuth; six grandchildren, Jamie (Eddie), Craig (Diana Naatz), Katie (Alex) Evan, Lauren and Karleigh; and three great-grandchildren August, Louis and Amelia. He is also survived by two very special nieces and their families, Kristine Bunker and Paula Matuzak. Besides his wife Sally, he was predeceased by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Charlotte and Donald LaBelle, and an infant sister. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at 1:00 pm on March 15, 2019 at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel 4480 Mackinaw Road Saginaw, Michigan with the Rev. Ted McCulloch officiating.
