Mary E. Schafer

Schafer, Mary E. Saginaw, Michigan Passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016, at her home, at the age of 87 years. Mary E. Hinman was born June 21, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Anne (Herald) and Charles J. Hinman Sr. She married Adam Schafer April 12, 1958 and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage together. Mary had been employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company, retiring after 28 years of service. She was an active member of St. Dominic Parish, SS Peter and Paul Church and its choir, and volunteered in other capacities. She enjoyed golfing and bowling, was secretary of her bowling league, and won the Gold Medal in the Senior Olympics for bowling. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She and her husband, Adam, were avid Detroit Tigers Fans. Mary's favorite saying, by which she led her life, was "Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone." Adam predeceased her September 7, 2014. Surviving are one sister, Martha Michaud, Roscommon; two brothers, David (Mary Ann) Hinman, Chicago, Illinois; Walter (Maureen) Hinman, Bay City; a brother-in-law, Harold (Madeline) Schafer, Saginaw; many nieces, nephews, and their families; and by her beloved Miss Kitty. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and George Hinman, and by two sisters, Ruth Gatliff and Catherine Jordan. Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2016, at St. Dominic Parish, SS Peter and Paul Church, 4735 W. Michigan Avenue. Rev. Fr. Andrew LaFramboise will officiate with entombment in St. Andrew Mausoleum. Her family will receive friends at the W. L. Case & Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, from 4:00 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, where a parish Vigil, led by Fr. John Johnson, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Family and friends may then gather at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
