Karen Sue (Nestell) Munson, Frankenmuth Michigan

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Karen passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital. She was 84 years old. The daughter of the late Berton Richard and Mary Ellen (Metiva) Nestell, Karen was born August 24, 1936 in Saginaw, Michigan. She was married to the late Andrew Claude Munson, her loving husband of 54 years, on August 20, 1955 at St. Matthew’s Church in Zilwaukee, Michigan. He preceded her in death on September 25, 2009.

Karen kept a quick wit and sharp mind through trumping others at cards, mastering mathematical and word puzzles or volunteering for the VFW. With a keen sense of adventure, she loved camping with her family and friends. Karen enjoyed beauty in its simplest forms and took pride in maintaining a lovely home and yard. Always possessing a green-thumb, she harvested and canned fruits and vegetables from her family’s extensive gardens. In her later years, she enjoyed trips to the casino, cooking delicious meals for her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Burt (Diane) Munson of Alaska, daughter Kathy Harmon of Washington, son Jerry (Darlene) Munson of Montrose, daughter Andrea Munson of North Carolina and daughter Alison (Doug) Bookmyer of Frankenmuth; grandchildren Nicole Duwe, Melissa (Jason) Irish, Crystal (Patrick) Ewing, Katie (Aaron) Hensley, Allie Munson, Nathan (Anisa) Bookmyer, Adam Bookmyer and Samuel Bookmyer; and great-grandchildren Kaden Garcia-Munson, Andrew Irish, Ethan Ewing, Arwyn Ewing, Elise Ewing, Oliver Ewing, Evelyn Hensley and Emery Bookmyer. Karen was preceded in death by her brothers Dale Nestell and Richard (Martha) Nestell and her sisters Mary (Grant) Mahan and Amber (Don) Burke.

A special thank you goes to Alison (Doug) Bookmyer and family for all the wonderful care they gave Karen in the last years of her life.

Honoring Karen’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of life will take place at a future date. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider donating to Wellspring Lutheran Homes of Frankenmuth.
