Joseph Betz, Sr.

Our loving father and grandfather passed away peacefully Monday, February 22, 2021. Age 94 years.

Joe was born in Merrill, June 22, 1926, where he lived and farmed his whole life. It became a Centennial Farm in 2012 in which he was so proud of. He also worked and retired from Wickes Lumber of Freeland. Joe and Ellen enjoyed traveling the United States for many years in which they visited 48 states, camping and belonged to a Euchre card club for over 50 years. He loved his tractors and farm equipment, woodworking and family time.

Joe will be missed by two daughters, Deborah Powell (George) of Riverdale, Amy Gebhardt (Gary) of Burton, and son and namesake Joseph H. Betz Jr. (Deneese) of Merrill; grandsons, Dale, Adam (Thia), and Jeffery (Shari) Rohn, Justin (Jaimee), Brett (Tiffany) and Jordan deceased (Natalie) Shemanski; granddaughter, Heather (Alex) Margres; great grandchildren, Savannah, Shayde, Emmett, Amelia, Ellis, Khloe, Arianna, JT, and Gemma; brother, Richard Betz of California; close family friend, Lillian Novak and his beloved Shihtzu, Gracie; also many nephews, nieces, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ellen Schoonmaker Betz in 2003, sister Marlene Miller in 2016, and grandson Jordan Shemanski in 2020.

Honoring Joseph’s wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial will be scheduled at a later date.
