Hicks, Irma Frieda Saginaw, Michigan Passed away on March 24, 2015 at the age of 97 years at HealthSource of Saginaw. The daughter of the late Martin and Martha (Bienert) Salvner was born on July 24, 1917. She grew up on the west side of Saginaw, attending Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Grade School. The family moved to a new home on State Street in 1929. Later, Irma attended Michigan Lutheran Seminary. She was a very popular girl, as she had the only car on campus. Irma met her future husband at a box lunch social when John purchased her box lunch. They were married on October 10, 1942. John died on October 7, 2002 a few days shy of their 60th wedding anniversary. Together, they owned and operated the Avalon Drive-In-Restaurant at State and Court for 23 years (1949-1972). Irma was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church and sang in the choir for 50 years. She also enjoyed playing the piano and was even invited to play with Saginaw Symphony Orchestra at the Germania Club. Irma enjoyed growing flowers, making meals for friends, family and shut-ins and baking cookies especially for the church's Christmas cookie sale. Surviving are her son, Fred and Betty Lou Hicks of McAllen, Texas; son-in-law, Larry Goodlander, Grand Rapids; granddaughters: Jennifer Goodlander, Bloomington, IN. and Kimberly Tyson (Dino), Grand Rapids and her children; Natalie and Cooper Tyson. Also, surviving are her niece, Judy Zirkle (Dick), Saginaw and her nephews, Ron Salvner (Nancy) Saginaw, Tom Salvner (Laura) Ann Arbor, and Gary Salvner (Kathy), Ohio. Preceding her in death were her husband, her daughter, Sally A. Goodlander, her brother, Arnold Salvner, her beloved sister, Nelda Hinz, and her cousin, Adell Weaver. Special thanks to the caring staff of HealthSource of Saginaw and the Great Lakes Unit, Heartland Hospice Group, and special friend, Jessica Beadle. Funeral service will take place at 11 A.M. on Monday, March 30, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church, 3427 Adams Ave. Rev. Paul Hinz will officiate with entombment in Oakwood Mausoleum. Friends may visit with the family at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. on Sunday from 2:00-6:00 p.m. and at church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service.
