Gerald L. Oomen Merrill, Michigan Passed away Monday, December 2, 2013, in Lakeland, Florida. Age 85 years. The son of the late Gerardus and Mary (VanAelst) Oomen was born April 6, 1928 in York, Pennsylvania. He married Shirley J. Williams, August 14, 1948. She passed away December 28, 2009 after 61 years of marriage. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Merrill. He served with the U. S. Army during WWII and retired from the Dow Chemical Company. He enjoyed woodworking, walking, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. He had spent his winters in Lakeland Florida. Surviving are one daughter and three sons and their spouses; Paula (Don) Rohn Jr., Merrill; Rich (Elaine) Oomen, Hobe Sound, Florida; Jerry (Phyllis) Oomen, Cheboygan, MI and Bob (Earlene) Oomen, Merrill; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Caroline Carey; several nieces and nephews. A grandson, Josh Heid-Oomen, and a brother and sister, Francis Oomen and Lillian Purgil have predeceased him. The funeral liturgy will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 6, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Merrill. Rev. Duane Wachoviak will officiate with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Merrill. Friends may call at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel in Merrill from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friends may then call at the Church from 10:30 a.m. Friday until the time of the funeral liturgy.
