Obituary

Passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Wellspring Assisted Living; he was 96 years old. Kenneth Mertin Hasse was born on April 4, 1923, in Swan Creek, Michigan, the son of the late Aaron and Minnie (Hofacer) Hasse. He was a graduate of Arthur Hill High School. Following graduation, Ken began working for General Motors - Malleable until he proudly enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, serving as a medic during World War II. Through the Scholars and Fox Holes program, Ken was able to attend William and Mary College. He then began working for Battle Creek VA Medical Center where he was in charge of civilian personnel. Upon his return to Saginaw, Ken began working for Malleable Iron as an engineer and attended the General Motors Institute. He retired in 1985 following 40 years of service. He married the love of his life, Betty Leggitt on July 22, 1950 where they celebrated 64 years of marriage; she preceded him in death on October 23, 2014. Ken was very active within the Methodist Church where he volunteered as a lay minister, Sunday school teacher, and was actively involved in the youth group. He was President of the Saginaw Rescue Mission Board and President of the Gideon’s International Westside Camp. As a young man he enjoyed roller skating. He also enjoyed playing and watching baseball. Above all, Ken loved to volunteer his time serving others.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters: Doug (Sharon) Hasse of Saginaw; Laurie (John) Watz of Bay City; Wendy (Tom) Donnelly of Bay City; Jeff (Cris) Hasse of Evart; Paul (Carol) Hasse of Dewitt; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Cleo Mielke of Hemlock; a special sister-in-law, Carol Curtis; a special niece, Connie Paige, whom they raised as their own. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; daughter, Faye Hasse; 10 brothers and sisters.

A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Ames United Methodist Church, 801 State St. Rev. Doug Mater will officiate. Burial and Military Honors under the auspices of the United States Army and American Legion Post #439 will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Saginaw City Rescue Mission or the Gideon’s International
